![]() ![]() As I see it, Crybaby being a prequel to the Manga is the only way to reconcile such stark differences between the different Ryos.Īnd PS, I’m not criticizing the anime at all! I think it’s a REALLY well-done adaptation!!! I’m just here to present this idea to anyone who might have come out of the manga loving Ryo’s character and being a little surprised at how differently he is depicted in the anime.Yeah you’re totally right. Of course, I could be totally wrong and we are probably never getting confirmation anyway but I choose to believe this theory as it holds a lot of merit in my opinion. Ryo is such a complex and important character to the devilman franchise (it is HIS love story as both Go Nagai and Yuasa claim) so to make these huge changes seems strange and perhaps too big to be an accident. ![]() Hence, the Prequel theory is the only way I could justify this omission. This is such a huge moment and I could not understand why they would not include something so important in the anime. Not only that, but in the manga he realizes that he has made a mistake in killing off humans, and expresses regret. While very similar at the core, Crybaby’s Satan seems too surprised when he realizes that Akira lies dead, almost like he is not used to the concept. Which could be, because, not even Ryo knows it himself at that point in time.ĥ) The contrast between the ending of Crybaby compared to the manga is another important distinction. Xenon does not show any signs of knowing it in the anime. ![]() In the manga, on the other hand, he has *always* known and Xenon even calls him out on it: While both Yuasa and Go Nagai himself call Devilman a love story, Crybaby’s Ryo doesn’t realize he is in love with Akira until the very end. This is such a sharp contract to how he is depicted in the anime - so instead of blaming poor characterization/writing it can be seen as him learning that from Akira in his first timeloop in Crybaby.Ĥ) Probably the most important point is this one. But the bottom panel does look like the face of a man who is trying to remember what being sad looks like, and is failing badly.Ģ) As Kea had pointed out in their tweets above, manga!Ryo is very gentle toward animals and refuses to kill them, even for food. Ryo has a lot of these sudden emotional outbursts throughout the whole manga. Strangely, this would also explain this iconic panel where Ryo’s expression absolutely does not match what he is saying: If the anime really is a prequel, this could very well be interpreted as him trying to learn human emotions and manage them better over the course of different lifetimes. Here you can literally see him watching his life story unfold before him, with a sense of futile inevitability that he fully knowing how it is going to end.ġ) Manga!Ryo is very emotional compared to his Crybaby incarnation. This is confirmed in the last chapter of the Amon manga and is alluded to in many other devilman sequels and spinoffs: Secondly, I would like to remind you that God had trapped Ryo/Satan in an endless timeloop as punishment, where he has to watch his loved one die over and over again. In fact, most of the sequel devilman works are considered AUs ‘canon’ is a very loose word and most of it Go Nagai leaves to the audience for interpretation. This goes without saying, but this post will be filled with SPOILERS so don’t read it until you’ve at least watched the anime.įor this theory to work you must first accept that timeloops/parallel universes/alternate realities are nothing new in devilman. They were the first one I’ve seen bring up this theory and they gave me permission to talk about it here. All credit goes to / royasuka for the idea. There is a theory that’s been going around on twitter and I’m surprised I haven’t seen it being talked about here on tumblr so I’ve decided to put together a post with all the supporting evidence in one place for convenience’s sake and so that new Devilman fans can see that there is more to Ryo’s character beyond how he is portrayed in the anime. If you have read the Devilman manga, you might have noticed the inconsistencies between how Ryo is characterized in Crybaby versus the original manga. Theory: Devilman Crybaby is a Prequel to the Manga ![]()
